MEA Test Results
Each year, during the month of March, all Maine students in grades 3-8 are given the MEA [Maine Educational Assessment]. These assessments are designed to measure whether or not our students are mastering the standards written in Maine's Learning Results. All students are assessed in Math and Reading. Some grades are also assessed in science and writing. Last year's results are posted on our website as a Power Point presentation. For each grade you will see how the class did compared to the state average and for many classes, how they did compared to last year. [In other words, we can now compare a class to itself last year, rather than to a different group of students last year.] Our goal is to move more students toward "meeting the standard" each year.
Test results are not available until late in the summer, when an individual student report is mailed directly to parents. Teachers and administrators also use information from our students' performance to determine where we need curricula work. We are able to analyze how our students answered each question, which helps us recognize what kinds of questions our students need more experience with, as well as our strengths and weaknesses.
Maine's revised Learning Results: Parameters for Essential Instruction were adopted in October of 2007. You can find them on the Department of Education's website at www.state.me.us/education/ . On the left side of the home page you will see a list of categories. Click on Learning Standards and Guidelines and it will take you to the learning results.
