What does a guidance counselor do?

In order for a child to learn, they have to feel safe in school. Guidance counselors help students learn to work together in cooperative ways. They support students having difficulties in school. Specific issues that guidance counselors deal with are:

 

  • Making and keeping friends
  • Making choices and decisions
  • Anger control
  • Dealing with family issues such as divorce, death and sibling rivalry
  • Career preparation
  • Developing positive self-esteem
  • Social skills training
  • Other specific topics requested by the child
 

Guidance counselors work with all students.

Guidance counselors work with parents.

Guidance counselors work with teachers.
